I am designing a modular system of devices [form] that will enable visually-impaired people [users] to confidently navigate the ever-changing world around them. By augmenting the function of their canes to process more information as they see fit [function], they will be able to gain a more in-depth understanding of their surroundings and overcome barriers that impede their quality of life [purpose].

The purpose of my project is to gain real-world experience with inclusive/accessible design by conducting a self-driven project that covers everything from research, unlearning biases/assumptions, identifying & recruiting participants, creating iterative prototypes, and conducting user testing.
A core part of my project is to participate in co-creation with my participant in order to hone my skills in identifying user grievances and coming up with meaningful solutions for them instead of working by myself.
Gap between designers’ abilities & users’ experiences that forms an opportunity for co-creation
My focus is to find ways to improve the quality of life of visually-impaired people by working with them to find ways to address the shortcomings of the aids that they frequently use. These shortcomings can be the result of assumptions made by able-bodied designers.
Co-creation with visually-impaired partners can alleviate these shortcomings by involving them in every step of the design process, ensuring that their needs are met and their concerns addressed.
